As the Mayor and City Council (MCC) embarks on addressing the council’s financial position with budget proposals, a lot of emphasis is being placed on taxes, properties, encumbrances and other areas, not forgetting the famous City Hall.
Mayor Hamilton Green explained that in the past, City Hall which serves a number of purposes, was always a magnificent site. It became a ‘Heritage Site’.
To date, time has caused a lot of damage to the building itself and the restoration project which includes some major repairs needs a significant amount of funding.
Kaieteur News understands that Government has committed $20M to assist in this endeavour and so far, the MCC has received the first tranche of $5M. The works are scheduled to begin within two weeks.
Green stated, “It will be a slow, tedious process to restore the building. The idea is to restore the City Hall to its character, its beauty and its historical significance. It requires technical competence and patience.”
The Mayor further added, “I have asked the Town Clerk not to spend a cent until we have things in place to keep that noble objective.”
Commenting on the garbage collection, Kaieteur News understands that two major constraints facing the Council are that the contractors have asked for a 20 per cent increase in fees due to the shift of the dumpsite from Le Repentir to Haags Bosch on the East Bank Demerara.
Another challenge is that operations do not run for 24 hours or for long hours at Haags Bosch. The collectors cease works by 18:00 hours, so this causes a back log in the garbage pile up.
At present there is a proposal for purchasing four compactor trucks which have already been purchased, two of which will be received by the end of this month, to assist in areas.
