The local Bar Association launched the fourth edition of the New Guyana Bar review at the Georgetown Club Friday.
The launch attracted Chief Justice Ian Chang, former presidents of the Bar Association Kashir Khan and Teni Housty, along with present president of the association Timothy Jonas. There were also other members of the Guyana Bar Association.
The 2011 New Guyana Bar Review is presently being sold at $2,500.
Bar Association’s executive Nigel Hughes congratulated Attorney-at-law, Timothy Jonas, on his re-election as President of the Guyana Bar Association.
Jonas is from the law firm, de Caires, Fitzpatrick and Karran. He was re-elected last month.
Attorney at Law Hughes said that the New Guyana Bar Review has a very long and proud history with many contributors.
Jonas said the new Guyana Bar Review is a journal published by the bar association. It was intended to be an annual publication. However, it is important because it provides a public forum in which members of the legal fraternity and academia can discuss the works being done in the court.
Adding that the public perception is that the work done in the court is less than transparent, Jonas said that this can be changed by publications which are available. And as such consistency and practice can be followed on the bar and the bench as it relates to case reports.
Jonas noted that three years ago under the auspices of former president, Kashir Khan, the USAID was approached for a grant that was intended to be seed money behind the concept that the money spent behind the first publication would be recouped by the sales which would support following publications.
Jonas said it is intended that the sale from the latest edition would be used for further editions.
He added that the book focuses on topical issues from the perspective of the bench, bar, judiciary and members of the bar. While there are recent topics being discussed by the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), local law fraternity and the topic of the confessions in preliminary inquiries by accused persons.
