Former light-welterweight boxer Linden ‘Buckman’ Mortley was gunned down at around 19:45 hrs last night on a bridge connecting Festival City to Lamaha Springs.
Mortley, said to be in his forties, and of Lot 13 Sussex Street, Charlestown, was found lying on the bridge with a gunshot wound beneath the ear.
The slain man was wearing a white vest and a pair of three-quarter camouflage pants.
He was positively identified by his wife, who visited the scene after Kaieteur News informed her of his demise.
The distraught woman was eventually taken away from the scene in a police car, after porters had removed the body.
Police also cordoned off the area and searched for spent shells but reportedly found none.
It is unclear how the ex-boxer met his end.
However, there were reports of a robbery earlier in the area.
Some residents recalled hearing three gunshots shortly before the body was found.
Kaieteur News understands that Mortley, who has a motorcycle, left his home last night after receiving an urgent telephone call. He reportedly told the caller that “he ain’t able with that, left it till tomorrow.’ But shortly after, the ex-boxer left his home.
When Kaieteur News arrived at the scene several police ranks were already there.
Mortley’s boxing career spanned from 1985 to 1993.
A member of the boxing fraternity described him as a very capable fighter.
