They say that cricket is a game of glorious uncertainties and on a sunshiny day when the West Indies cricket team defied the odds and dished out a ten wickets drubbing on Pakistan at the National Stadium Providence, National Scrabble Champion, Abigail McDonald emulated their performance and proved that scrabble is also a game of similar propensities.
She amassed five games and a positive spread of 574 to defy the odds and capture the honours in the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) Arrival Day Open championship at the Malteenoes Sports Complex Thomas lands, yesterday morning. The local scrabble queen surrendered her second round game to tournament favourite, Moen Gafoor (51) but rebounded to register wins over Nanda Hafeez (110), Julian Skeete (19), Michael Benjamin (223), Orlando Michael (85) and James Krakowsky (188). Gafoor rebounded from a loss to James Krakowsky (110) and a close shave victory against Benjamin (22) to also chalk up 5 games but a lower spread of 210 to fill the second place. Krakowsky suffered losses to Benjamin (113) and McDonald (21) but regained his composure with wins over Orlando Michael (93), R O Michael (47), Grace Hercules (195) and Gafoor (110).
The tournament was competed at a high standard and no player was ever entirely certain of occupying the premium spot with the final round deciding the eventual winners. The players convene once again on May 26 for the Independence Open championships at the same venue.
Players are also reminded that practice sessions are still staged in the pavilion of the Malteenoes Sports Club from 19:00hrs 0n Thursdays.
