The Bartica Football Association in conjunction with the Three Miles Secondary School and the Ministry of Education on Wednesday last launched a Students Referees Programme involving a dozen students of the school who are being tutored by Ian Beckles, a former FIFA Referee turn Instructor.
At the simple opening ceremony attended by Headmistress Debra Gomes, BFA President and Secretary Carlos Prowell and Carlton Beckles, Prowell expressed his gratitude to Gomes and the Ministry of Education allowing the association the opportunity to work to develop the students in this aspect of the sport.
“I would like to encourage you all to grasp with both hands whatever is taught to you during the coming weeks. The sky is the limit in terms of aiming to become the best you can be in this field. The BFA would also like to encourage you to focus on your education and to aim high always. We are looking forward to you becoming actively involved overtime in the officiating of matches in this association.”
Headmistress Gomes stated her delight in being approached to have the students exposed to this kind of training. She noted that it was a good way of getting the students involved in something that would be beneficial to their holistic development. “Programmes of this nature will help to keep them away from the many distractions bugging our society today. I wish them all the best and am looking forward to seeing them do Bartica and Guyana proud in the future.”
Ms. Gomes gave her unflinching support for the programme noting that the programme will certainly contribute to the rounded development of the students.
According to the BFA, the programme is designed to teach the students (boys & girls) the rudiments of refereeing and to help them acquire the relevant skills at an early age. It is also designed afford students the necessary exposure of officiating the game with the hope of helping them attain the requisite experience and training as well as behavioral competencies needed to ultimately become FIFA qualified Referees and Assistant Referees.
Beckles is the first male FIFA Accredited Referee from Bartica, while Guyana’s first female FIFA Referee also hails from Bartica, Dianne Ferreira-James.
The Three Miles Secondary has a student population of over 500 students and came into existence in January 2009, occupying a brand new building. The school also has dorms for male and female students and teachers. Sessions will be held every Wednesday at the school.
The students participating are Ecliffe Carrington, Leon Spencer, Jeremy Joseph, Lindsley Jones, Brandon Mc Cubbin, Alec Hopkinson, Kristoff Nurse, Ryan Budhoo, Wesmore Gunn, Romario Perreira; female students Victoria Wong and Tenesha Bobb. Also sitting on the sessions with the students will be male teacher, Festus Benn.
