Teachers at the Novar Primary and Secondary schools had to discontinue a few classes on Thursday after two male Fifth Form students took ill suddenly.
Kaieteur News understands that the two students who attend the secondary school were trying to open a door to an abandoned toilet at the back of the school when they collapsed. Eyewitnesses said that teachers and a few parents who raced to the school started rubbing lime and methylated sprits on the boys. They were convinced that they were doing what should be done in the case of spirit possession.
This newspaper was told that the parents were called in and the boys were taken home. A vendor outside of the school said that officials from the school needed to seriously address the problem.
According to the woman, only last week another fifth form student collapsed at the back of the school when they tried to break the toilet.
The vendor said that the problems started after the people tore down an old latrine.
Efforts yesterday to speak to an official from the school proved futile.
