Two teenaged gunmen brazenly pounced on founder of the Chronicle Atlantic Symphony Steel Orchestra, 65-year-old Rudy Bishop, shortly after he arrived in Guyana early yesterday morning.
A black briefcase containing a quantity of jewellery, important documents, medication and $30,000 was stolen, while a chain was removed from the victim’s neck. Bishop said that there were other pieces in the briefcase.
He is offering a reward for the return of his documents.
Reports are that Bishop, after touching down at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, was transported by minibus to his sister-in-law’s residence in Meadow Brook, where he was robbed outside the premises by two armed men.
He said that his nephew was supposed to have picked him up but he had problems with the vehicle and he failed to do so.
Bishop said that the minibus, which is attached to the Airport Taxi Service, had just arrived in front of Lot 96 Wallaba Road, where Bishop’s sister-in-law resides. Bishop was in the front passenger seat throughout the journey, while his briefcase was placed on the conductor’s seat of the minibus.
Kaieteur News understands that while Bishop was calling out to a member of the household in order to signal his arrival, the two gunmen approached him and one of them demanded money and valuables, while the other snatched a chain off of Bishop’s neck.
He said that he saw a white car parked nearby and soon after he exited the vehicle he heard the vehicle sounding its horn. He later concluded that the horn was a signal for the gunmen to attack.
The bandits made good their escape in the unidentified white car.
No shots were fired and though several persons were questioned concerning the matter no useful information was gathered. Police are still conducting investigations.
When Kaieteur News visited the residence, the popular musician stated that he was hoping that he would be somehow able to retrieve his documents.
“I have some feelers out…so I am hoping to get back my documents; those are very important to me.”
Bishop opined that the perpetrators must have trailed him from the airport.
