Dear Editor,
Is there a special brand of justice for certain Guyanese? I ask this question sincerely after reading a report in the Kaieteur News on Saturday March 12 entitled “Nanda Gopaul rams into parked car injures occupants”.
The news story outlines the salient points of what transpired regarding the role of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) in initially investigating the accident.
What is bewildering to me is the police refusal to conduct immediately the mandatory breathalyzer test on Dr. Gopaul.
According to the news story, “Dr Gopaul was escorted to the Brickdam Police Station, where police ranks were reportedly preparing to have him take a breathalyzer test.
However, Kaieteur News was told that a senior officer instructed traffic ranks to have Dr Gopaul released on his own recognizance.”
Why would that senior officer issue such an instruction? Are senior officers of the GPF in the habit of flippantly pardoning reckless drivers?
I would like the GPF to tell the nation why it refused to conduct a breathalyzer test on Dr. Nanda Gopaul immediately after the accident.
This kind of selective administration of justice only helps to maintain the ugly image of the GPF. Please officers, be professional. Rediscover your basic sense of integrity, honesty, and the adherence to code of ethics, conduct and standards.
If John Public is involved in an accident and a breathalyzer test must be administered; then when Nanda Gopaul is involved in an accident, he must also undergo an immediate breathalyzer test.
Failure to do so should see the police scrapping the breathalyzer test altogether. After all, what is good for one must be good for all!
