Dear Editor,
Japan sits in a highly seismic area, thus earthquakes are quite normal and occur almost daily at varying degrees and magnitudes. As a result citizens do not react with alarm when it happens.
In addition, construction is done in strict adherence to building codes that are based on the aforementioned fact. One shudders to think how much more the magnitude of the recent tsunami caused by the 8.8 earthquake off the Japanese coast would have been were those realities absent.
This experience was naturally scary for me but the professionalism of those in authority quickly quelled my fears as they ushered us to safety since being located a fair distance from the epicentre provided ample time to calculate the approximate hour the tsunami would have reached where we were. There is a lot that our nation can learn from the Japanese in relation to disaster preparedness and national response and coordination.
Now that the worse has passed, it is now time to save as many lives, rebuild and prevent or minimise other dangers such as the scenario at the Fukushima Nuclear Power plant.
I would like to thank all my friends and colleagues that were preoccupied for my safety and through Facebook especially kept checking on my wellbeing.
There is an aspect that I would like to highlight. Since Guyana does not have an Embassy in Japan I am registered with the British Embassy instead. They have been making contact with me by email and telephone to ascertain if I am fine and need any assistance. I am thankful for that and would encourage Guyanese to register with the nearest United Kingdom representative if you ever go to a country where a Guyanese consulate is absent.
In the meantime continue to pray for the land of Rising Sun.
Dr. Devon Dublin
