Once regarded as amongst the best school in local basketball, St. Stanislaus College will aim to recapture that glory during its inaugural Mashramani Inter-Schools Competition which commences on Monday with a double-header, at the school’s Hardcourt on Brickdam.
The tournament is being sponsored by United Insurance Company Ltd, a Barbados-based organisation of which John Fernandes Ltd is the local agent.
The event was officially launched in the foyer of the school yesterday and in attendance was past student Allan LaRose, who now goes by the name Ras Abdalla Tafari Wadada, sponsor’s representative Vibert Austin, students and members of the organising committee headed by Ronald Jordan.
Wadada in his opening remarks spoke of the rich history of the sport within the school, adding that the institution has made a significant contribution to sports in the country.
The past student disclosed that at one time, the school paraded the best team in basketball in the country at one time, while it also made a significant impact in many other disciplines at the junior level.
Wadada, whose involvement in the media has spanned in excess of 25 years and over the period, has earned the respect of many of his peers, told the gathering that it was due to the quality education that he received at the school that was mainly responsible for moulding such a successful career in the media.
He said many past students of the school were able to go on and fill important positions within the society and it clearly speak volumes of the standard of education then and how receptive the students were as well.
Wadada urged members of the media, students both past and present and parents to come out and support the tournament.
Austin in his address spoke of the Company’s track record for the support for sport which according to him is a good one. He stated that recent studies have shown that students who participate in sports are more inclined to do well academically as well.
“As you might have heard before, healthy bodies very often produces healthy minds,” Austin reminded.
He revealed that the Company is committed and happy to be part of the initiative and extended best wishes to the organisers for a well run tournament.
Jordan then gave an outline of the tournament, disclosing that two games will be played daily starting at 15:30 hrs and 11 other schools have been invited to participate.
They are: Charlestown Secondary, Marian Academy, Brickdam Secondary, Plaisance Secondary, School of the Nations, St. Rose’s High, Bishop’s High, Guyana Educational Trust College (GETC), President’s College, Queens College and The Business School.
The tournament runs until February 22 and opening day will see Charlestown Secondary versus Marian Academy; Bishop’s High takes on GETC and Plaisance Secondary engages School of the Nations.
