Junior Jags beat Winners Connection 5-2 in warm up game
United Sates born midfielder Brandon Beresford who made his senior International debut for Guyana against Guatemala on November 17, 2010 has joined the National Under-20 squad preparing for the CONCACAF Under-20 qualifying competition.
Guyana will take on host Suriname, Bermuda and the Netherlands Antilles from January 19-23 with the winner of this group advancing to the CONCACAF finals set for Guatemala, April 3-17.
Beresford was drafted into the senior team for the Atlanta game due to a number of players not being released by their various clubs and impressed during the short time he played, coming on as a substitute for Brion Baker in the 78th minute.
The 6” 1′ Graceland University student will add depth to the national team and has been doing well since joining the team according to Head Coach Collie Hercules.
The squad in their first warm up game, defeated Winners Connection of Linden 5-2 and Hercules said he is happy with the overall performance of his charges in the game.
“I think the guys did well against Winners given the few days we have been together. We have been able to identify a number of areas where we can improve and will be playing another warm up game against a Linden Under-23 team tomorrow at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground.”
Despite the challenges being posed by consistent rain, the Junior Jaguars are forging ahead and aiming to take the top spot in this group.
The last few tournaments in Suriname have produced excellent results for Guyana at the senior level and the juniors will be aiming to maintain the dominance of their seniors.
A number of these players were part of the senior team which played in Suriname and have expressed confidence that Guyana will take care of business against Bermuda on Wednesday January 19, Suriname two days later and the Netherlands Antilles on January 23; all matches will be played at the Andre Kamperveen Stadium, Parimaribo.
