Dear Editor
As the first Principal of the Hindu College when it was founded by Swami Purnanand Ji in 1957, I find the insinuation (reportedly made by Mr. Jeremiah Mohabir) that only Hindus were/are allowed to teach at the Hindu College quite erroneous.
When the Hindu College opened its doors in 1957, we had three teachers — Mr Bunny Smith, a Christian; Mr. Ramesh Shastri, a Hindu, and myself also a devout Hindu.
The school’s policy, then, was that students will be facilitated to pray in one of the three major religions in Guyana (Christian, Hindu and Muslim). As was the custom then, morning prayers were led by teachers. Therefore we had an obvious dilemma in that the three teachers represented only two religions.
As Principal, and in deference to our stated policy of facilitating the three religions, I took it upon myself to “conduct” the prayers for the Muslim students.
So I quickly contacted Mr Hydarally, a businessman and Moulvi from Golden Grove, to teach me a Muslim prayer which he generously did so that I could lead the Muslim students in morning prayers.
I elaborate on this point merely to demonstrate the strong commitment the Hindu College had for equality of religion.
I spoke today with Mrs. Rajkoomarie Singh, current Principal of the Hindu College who confirmed that while at this time only Hindu prayers are said, there is absolutely no discrimination in hiring non-Hindu teachers.
Indeed there are non-Hindu teachers and students at the school and as far as she knows that was always the case.
In pursuit of tolerance.
