Two of Guyana’s most promising swimmers – Britany van Lange and Ronaldo Rodrigues – will be this country’s representatives at the 10th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) in Dubai from December 15 – 19, 2010 at the Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Sports Complex.
The two-member team along with Manager/Coach Joann Lowe arrived in Dubai yesterday ahead of what is described as the most competitive FINA World Swimming Championships.
The short course swimming championships have been held every 2 years since the inaugural championships began in Palma de Mallorca, Spain in 1993.
Over the five-days the World Swimming Championships are expected to attract 30,000+ spectators, 1,000+ Swimmers and 250+ Media from 140+ countries.
Dubai 2010 will be the first time that the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) will be held in the Middle East.
The venue, Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Sports Complex located in Dubailand is a 15,000 seater state of the art aquatics facility.
van Lange, has been very impressive for Guyana at the Inter Guiana and Goodwill levels and will seek to gain as much experience as she can at this Meet, the biggest of her fledgling career.
Rodrigues too, a young bright prospect for Guyana will hope to learn as much as he can against some of the best swimmers in the World.
The Men and Women athletes will compete in 40 different events:
Freestyle: 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m and 1,500m
Backstroke: 50m, 100m and 200m
Breaststroke: 50m, 100m and 200m
Butterfly: 50m, 100m and 200m
Individual Medley: 50m, 100m and 200m
Relays: 4×100 m freestyle, 4×200 m freestyle and 4×100 m medley
The USA is expected to have the largest swimming team with over 75 athletes, coaches and medical staff.
Rodrigues will compete in the following events: 100m Breaststroke (Dec. 15), 200m Freestyle (Dec. 15), 50m Freestyle (Dec. 16), 200m Breaststroke (Dec 17), 50m Butterfly (Dec 17), 100m Freestyle (Dec. 18), 100m Individual Medley (Dec. 18), 50m Breaststroke (Dec. 18).
van Lange’s events are the 100m Freestyle (Dec. 16), 50m Butterfly (Dec. 16), 100m Individual Medley (Dec. 16), 400m Freestyle (Dec. 17), 50m Backstroke (Dec. 18), 50m Freestyle (Dec. 18), 200m Freestyle (Dec. 19).
