A Mayor and City Council worker who has been bicycling miles to work for the last 25 years made his last journey to work yesterday.
Suresh Sawh, 47, called ‘Ramesh’ of 136, Fourth Street, Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara became the latest victim of a fatal accident that occurred in the vicinity of UG Road, Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara yesterday.
Sawh died at 5:20hrs when Rav4 PJJ-8098 hit him while he was riding his bicycle to the city. The RAV 4 was also heading to Georgetown. The man’s right hand was completely severed and he also sustained a gaping wound to the head amongst other injuries.
A woman who was also in the vehicle at the time of the accident was taken to a hospital in the city.
The father of one was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital by police officers and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The driver of the Rav4 is in police custody at the Sparendaam Police Station pending charges.
According to Lilowtie Sawh, the dead man’s wife, the last word that her husband uttered before leaving for work, was, “Next week time like this is my daughter’s birthday in St Maaren” then he left for a part time job gardening in Bel Air Park, Greater Georgetown.
The grieving woman said that Suresh worked at the Mayor and City Council in Georgetown, and would also be involved in part time gardening, weeding of parapets and yards in order to supplement his income.
She described her husband as a very hard working man who “never liked staying home. He ride he bicycle to work for the past 25 years; he loved to work.”
Ms Sawh said that she received the distressing news of her husband’s demise at 6:00hrs, after her neighbour’s husband saw the bicycle on the road while he was heading toward Georgetown in the taxi he drives.
Sawh’s brother, Abarnauth Sawh, said that he last spoke to his brother Tuesday morning after picking him up on his way to work since he would normally leave for work very early each morning.
The bereaved man said that he learnt that the driver of the vehicle is a foreigner, “and they say that he had some girl in he car too. He was drunk and he undertake a car, pick me brother up and slam he into the traffic light and throw he over the other side between UG and Turkeyen as you bounce over the traffic light on the main road…He had some girl in the vehicle too but she run away after the accident happened.”
He explained that after visiting the accident site, the skid mark from the ‘Rav4’ showed clearly what happened. He saw his brother’s mangled body.
“Only the skull yo seeing. All mey brother scalp tear off; all two of he hands break up and he face got long, long cut.”
He said after the postmortem that is to be done on Friday, the family will arrange burial at Sandys Funeral Home.
The deceased man’s relatives are calling on the relevant authority to ensure that justice prevails in dealing with the matter, since they are afraid the perpetrator would not pay for his careless actions.
