Pauline Williams appeared in court yesterday for murder before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that between November 5 and November 6, at Eclipse Falls, North West, the accused murdered Augustine Henry.
Williams, who was unrepresented, was not required to plead since the charge is indictable.
On the day in question, the defendant and family members were consuming “piwari,” when the deceased went home, reportedly under the influence of alcohol.
Eyewitnesses said that Henry leaned on a post near the accused, and then the defendant picked up a piece of wood from a fire side and dealt him several lashes to his head. The deceased fell to the ground and was later taken to the Port Kaituma hospital, where he succumbed, while receiving medical treatment.
The defendant is to make her next court appearance on February 2, 2011.
Also appearing before Magistrate Beharry was Stephan Pearson, who was charged with three offences.
It is alleged that on Monday last, the accused unlawfully had in his possession one .9mm pistol, 25 live .9mm rounds of ammunition and 494 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
The defendant, who was unrepresented, was not required to plead, since the charges are indictable.
Prosecutor Harvey told the court that on the day in question, the police were heading into the Arimu Backlands in the North West District, when they saw a motor vehicle GLL5698 moving in the opposite direction. Harvey said that the defendant was a passenger in the front seat of the vehicle. He added that a search was conducted on the vehicle and its occupants, when the items were discovered in a black haversack belonging to the defendant.
Harvey said that the defendant was arrested and charged for the offences. The Magistrate refused bail and the defendant is scheduled to make his next court appearance on February 2, 2011.
