Stiffer competition awaits Guyana’s ‘Golden Jaguars’ in Stage Two of Group F of the Digicel Caribbean Cup 2010 which kicks off at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, in the Twin Island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago tomorrow.
The Guyanese, unbeaten in competition this season after sweeping Stage One Group C in Suriname will match skills with Haiti in their opener from 17:00hrs and a win over opponents they are facing for the first time is of vital importance to the Jaguars, aiming to emulate the Women by qualifying for the Gold Cup.
The local (Guyana) based players under the guidance of Head Coach Wayne Dover and the rest of the technical staff arrived in Trinidad yesterday morning to join the T&T, USA and England based players ahead of what is anticipated to be a stern test for Guyana.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport via email, Dover, one of Guyana’s most successful Head Coaches ever, disclosed that 11 players were encamped in Guyana and the main focus was working on the conditioning of his charges, goal scoring and team organisation, three areas of concern to himself and staff.
In the first stage Guyana continued their dominance over old rivals Suriname with a 2-0 win that sealed the group honours after triumphing over Netherlands Antilles 3-2 and St. Lucia 1-0.
But the level of competition is a step up for this stage and Dover is of the view that these games are very important to the future of the sport in the Cooperative Republic.
“To date this will be our strongest test in international football, I welcome this test because this is the only way we’ll know where we’re at, so winning the group or even qualifying as one of the two teams will be good for Guyana.”
“What I want to assure all Guyana that they can expect a good and disciplined performance from the Golden Jaguars in these games to ensure we qualify for the final round and the Gold Cup.”
USA-based midfielder Chris Nurse who plays with the Puerto Rico Islanders has been summoned to join the team as they strengthen for the battles at hand. The other overseas based players who played in Suriname are all back, John Rodrigues and Sean Cameron both of Miami FC, UK based Christopher Bourne and Jake Newton along with the T&T trio of Charles Pollard, Walter Moore and Shawn Beveney.
The 11 based in Guyana are Ronson Williams, Derrick Carter (goalkeepers),Captain Howard Lowe (defence), Dwain Jacobs (midfield), Dwight Peters (forward), Dwayne Ali (midfield), Devon Millington (forward), Philbert Moffatt (midfield), Anthony Abrams (forward), Warren Gilkes (midfield) and Eusi Phillips (midfield) who has also been drafted into the team for the first time this season.
Tomorrow’s main game features home team T&T against St. Vincent & the Grenadines who spoiled Guyana’s bid for Gold Cup qualification in the 2006/2007 DCC when they defeated Guyana 2-0 in T&T at the finals. It was Guyana’s only loss in that edition of the competition which made the difference in qualifying.
So, when the two teams lock horns, the ‘Golden Jaguars’ ranked 98 in the World and 2nd in the CFU will have a score to settle. But the focus will be to get past Haiti in their opening game tomorrow.
Finishing has forever been a challenge, Dwight Peters, Dwain Jacobs, Anthony Abrams who struggled in Suriname, Sean Cameron and others will have to make use of chances when created as there will be very little room for error this time around.
When Guyana and T&T clashed on September 26 at the Providence Stadium in Guyana in a friendly game, it ended 1-1. The ‘Golden Jaguars’ have since knocked T&T out of the number 2 spot in the Caribbean making their clash on November 4 a potentially exciting match up.
Guyana’s final group game will be on November 6 against St. Vincent & the Grenadines.
