– Alexander Village woman among suspects
The reign of terror created by a gang in the gold mining area of Aranka came to an abrupt end with the capture of an entire gang of criminals on Saturday.
The gang, which comprised four males and a female, was nabbed when a police riverain patrol intercepted them while they were apparently making their way out of the interior, after creating havoc the previous day.
Kaieteur News understands that all of the males hail from the East Coast Demerara Village of Ann’s Grove, while the lone female’s address is listed as Alexander Village in the city.
The gang had committed several brazen armed robberies in the Aranka area, targeting several gold mining camps and shops.
Police are now trying to establish if the gang was responsible for any of the several murders in the interior.
According to a source at the Bartica Police Station, three of the suspects have already confessed to being members of the gang.
This newspaper was reliably informed that based on a report made to the police at Bartica, ranks there, led by Assistant Superintendent Edmund Cooper, along with a Brazilian miner, who provided them with logistical support, quickly mobilised and traveled to a location where they intercepted the gang.
They were taken back to Bartica where a search of their persons unearthed some items suspected to be part of their loot.
But the police recovered no weapons and according to the source, a high level team, including two gazetted police officers, returned to the Aranka area with the assistance of a Brazilian national, in an effort to locate the gang’s weapons among other things pertinent to their investigations.
The source said that one of the gang members related that he had sold his weapon, while another claimed that he had rented a gun to ply his trade.
At least two of the gang members are convicted felons.
One of them was only released from prison in May this year.
This newspaper contacted the mother of one of the gang members and she indicated that she had been contacted by the police immediately after he was captured.
Investigators are now in the process of building their case against the gang members who were lucky to be captured alive.

Father pleads for return of missing son
The parents of 10-year-old Pitamber Singh are pleading with the general public to assist them in locating their missing son.
According to the child’s father, Tribhawin Singh, his son Pitamber Singh went missing last Thursday in the vicinity of Demico restaurant at the Stabroek Market, while he was with a cousin.
The 10- year old hails from Mahaica Creek, East Coast of Demerara but was spending the August vacation with a relative in the city.
The father said that his son was last seen wearing a pair of khaki pants, a cream-coloured shirt, white sneakers, and a black cap and was carrying a bird cage when he disappeared.
Pitamber’s father mentioned that when he had confronted the relative who was supposed to have been looking after his son, the cousin told him that he had left the child in Demico and went across to the Stabroek Market to make a purchase.
The cousin told the child’s father that upon his return, Pitamber was nowhere to be seen. The father reported that vendors around the area told him they did see the child on the said day, heading along the Water Street pavement.
Tribhawin Singh said that he made a missing person’s report at the Brickdam police station.
However, when this newspaper contacted the police to inquire if they had received a report of the missing child, an officer there answered in the negative.
The child’s father is appealing to anyone with information about his son’s whereabouts to contact him on telephone number 620-7049 or the nearest police station.
