Dear Editor,
I was not aware that I was in an argument with Freddie Kissoon, so he can save himself the self-insult. I, however, will not stand idly by and allow the Kaeiteur News readers to be fed lies about Fidel and Cuba especially by someone whose information is based on imperialist propaganda. I was there when it happened, I saw the Cubavision news and I read El Granma newspaper so I owe the Revolution that much at least.
It is not uncommon for world leaders to disclose some aspects of their illness to the masses; everyone’s medical information is personal.
Nevertheless, in Fidel Castro’s case we knew from the inception what the problem was but the government was tight-lipped on the severity.
He underwent surgery in July 2006 for acute intestinal crisis with sustained bleeding, a procedure that was performed in its entirety by Cuban doctors. A section of his intestines was removed and due to being put on a special diet and recommended rest conceded power to Raul Castro temporarily on 31st July, 2006, while he recuperated.
As we all know this became permanent eventually after careful personal consideration and advice by his doctors.
Spanish doctor, Jose Luis Garcia Sabrido, has been a personal friend of Raul Castro for many years. He has seen Fidel on a number of occasions, in his own words “on a strictly personal basis”. In December, 2006 a few days before Xmas he made an analysis of Fidel’s condition and was allowed to make statements to the Cuban and International media, so it was no secret to us in Cuba that Dr. Garcia was consulted. As a matter of fact many persons overseas wanted to hear from a non-Cuban doctor concerning Castro’s condition and he confirmed that the ailing leader was not suffering from any form of cancer as was being speculated.
Concerning the American Embargo, I am happy to know that my good friend supports the lifting of the inhumane blockade. While the people of America were not consulted when it was first implemented I have no problem consulting with them to have it removed. I am certain that if it is done today the blockade will cease to exist tomorrow.
Mr. Editor, the average American citizen don’t live their life preoccupied about Cuba or any other country in the planet as a matter of fact, they are too busy trying to make a living.
I have met many American citizens in Cuba who visited the island secretly in defiance of their government’s rules. They do so through Bahamas or Mexico using a visa that is not placed in their passport.
Even as I pen this letter the annual Caravan to Cuba organised by the Pastors for Peace is making its way through Canada and the USA on its way to Mexico collecting items to be sent to Cuba to assist them in their struggle. These are American pastors that are harassed every year and even charged by the nation who says “In God We Trust” but they continue to do it bravely every year under the guidance of Rev. Lucius Walker.
In Miami I have met some of my Cuban expatriate friends, who confirmed that even the anti-Castro mafia are peeved with the blockade because their travel to the land of their birth is curbed and what they send for their relatives on the island is tightly controlled. So the results of the vote anyone can guess.
Dr. Devon Dublin
