Jul 08, 2010 Letters
Dear Editor,
My existence was questioned by Mr. Freddie Kissoon in his July 6th, 2010 letter although I used my real name. As a journalist I am sure he nevertheless can confirm my identity if he so desires. I don’t understand why he believes that every Guyanese currently overseas has abandoned their homeland and are not as patriotic as he is.
I made the decision to be a veterinary surgeon in my childhood and upon completing my secondary education proceeded along that path studying and working at REPAHA as well as with the NDDP under the Chairmanship of Dr. Steve Surujballi, the incumbent Chairman of GECOM. To ultimately fulfill my goal I had no choice but to study overseas at the Agrarian University of Havana where I graduated with honours as a Doctor in Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics.
Mr. Editor, due to my excellent performance, I was offered a paid scholarship by the Cuban Government to immediately pursue postgraduate studies in Preventative Medicine but forfeited that opportunity when I chose to fulfill my contractual obligations to the Guyana Government instead. I served as a Veterinary Officer in the Ministry of Agriculture, a position that I still hold while on leave pursuing postgraduate studies in Marine Life Sciences at the Hokkaido University in Japan.
Mr. Editor, I am a temporary expatriate achieving goals, that can only serve to benefit my country by obtaining qualifications that could not have been had at the University of Guyana or any other institution in my homeland that I know of. Being away from home is very much a personal sacrifice as well since I have left my now 12-year-old daughter Elisha in the lone care of her mother. I do look forward to serving my nation again upon completion of my present studies.
And by the way my success story occurred in its entirety under what Freddie refers to as a failed state.
Dr. Devon Dublin
