Several residents of Kwakwani who were affected by the recent flooding in the area were given aid by Food For The Poor (Guyana) Inc.
The residents of the area received food items and clothing.
Residents on the left and right banks of the Berbice River gathered at two strategic locations, at Water Front and Lamp Island where the distribution was done. Approximately 50 families were served at Lamp Island; and approximately 100 families, meeting at the boat crossing, were served.
Each family received an adequate hamper consisting of: rice packs, peas, beans, chick peas, canned beef broth, mashed potatoes in powder form, baby food, wipes, canned Cheddar cheese, potato chips, granola bars, canned mushrooms, canned tomatoes, macaroni and cheese sticks, clothing, rain boots, water, among other items.
Meanwhile, according to reports from Food For The Poor officials, flood water in the area is slowly receding, and residents, especially those in the very vulnerably Lamp Island area, are breathing sighs of relief.
This activity is representative of a weekly distribution project conducted by Food For The Poor (Guyana) Inc. “The organisation is honoured to make invaluable contributions to citizens in need wherever they are located in Guyana, with a strong desire to alleviate, and ultimately, eradicate poverty in this land of ours.”
The main economic activities of residents of Kwakwani are logging, mining and subsistence agriculture. However, as a result of frequent over-topping of the Berbice River due to high tide or heavy rainfall, these vital means of income and survival are severely crippled.
Rainfall also causes the trail to be impassable, thereby making it difficult for residents to access food and other necessities from other parts of the Region, and country by extension.
