Diane Torrington, 21, of Hyde Park, East Bank Demerara, a female pump attendant at the Two Brothers gas station was yesterday placed on $185,000 bail by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.
It is alleged that Torrington on May 19 forged one Two Brothers gas station payment bill for $13,802. It is further alleged that on the same day with the intent to defraud she obtained the said sum from the gas station.
She was not required to plead to the indictable offence.
Torrington’s lawyer, Mohamed Zafar, in a bail application said that she had no previous convictions, nor did she pose any flight risk.
Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford said that although the offence was of a serious nature he was not objecting to bail.
The court was told that Torrington was working as a pump attendant, when she allegedly forged the bill.
Telford said that on the day in question the woman “made out” the bill for a company that credits fuel from the gas station. The women later cashed the bill.
Calls were made to the company and it was later discovered that Torrington was the person who prepared the bill.
The magistrate granted her bail and she was ordered to return to court on June 13.
Also appearing before the same magistrate was Andre Welch, also known as Andy Welch.
It was alleged that the man on May 25, unlawfully and maliciously inflicted grievous bodily harm on Fenna Harriral.
It was further alleged that on the same day he unlawfully assaulted Richard Vanvield, a seven-year-old boy.
Welch pleaded not guilty to both charges. He was unrepresented by counsel.
When given a chance by the magistrate, Welch said that he caught the child throwing bricks at his son.
He said that he had cautioned the child, but the boy continued and he went to complain to the child’s mother.
The man said minutes later the child returned and starting cursing him. He denied hitting the child.
The child’s mother, who was present in court, told the magistrate that Welch was always in the habit of tormenting her son.
“My worship whenever he see my son he does call him a antiman and plenty other names”.
She said she would caution Welch on a number of occasions to desist from calling her son names.
However another relative of the child, Fenna Harriral, gave the court a different version of events.
The woman said she saw Welch slapping the child off of his bicycle. She said she ran outside and tried to restrain Welch, who attacked her.
She said she was pushed into a wall and chopped to the hand with a cutlass.
Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford did not object to bail. He warned both parties to refrain from conflict.
The magistrate granted $85,000 bail and ordered Welch to return to court on June 24.
