The Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) says it is working to introduce a computerised Driver’s Licence, similar to the National Identification Card.
GRA, explaining in a release yesterday, disclosed that it is in the process of computerising the motor vehicle driver’s licence system.
“Currently, staff members of the Licence Revenue Office are capturing information from the manual system into the computerised database.”
This system, the agency said, would bring Guyana on par with countries which are using computerised licences and bring greater recognition both locally and abroad to the licence.
“The new licence would take the form of a plastic card similar to the National Identification Card and information pertaining to owners would be shared with other entities such as the Guyana Police Force.”
According to the Senior Manager of the Licence Revenue Office, Sean Richmond, the Licence Revenue Office has also begun operations to update licence records as part of the project.
The computerising of the Motor Vehicle Driver’s Licence System is one of the projects on the front burner of the authority’s strategic plan and it is hoping to start issuing the licences by year-end.
The project is seeing the collaboration by the multi-stakeholder agencies including the Home Affairs Ministry and Guyana Police Force.
“The new computerised Driver’s Licence project is another step in keeping with the authority’s vision of a modern system which offers convenience and ensures integrity.
A year ago, the Computerised Motor Vehicle Licence was introduced. Vehicle owners have been high in praise of this modern licence which can be bought in all ten administrative regions.
The Implementation of the Total Revenue Integrated Processing System (TRIPS) in 2006 was GRA’s greatest expression of its will to automate and modernise its systems,” the statement said.
