Apart from sinking their opponents en route to the next stage of the Caribbean Football Union Champion League Qualifying competition, Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United is seeking revenge for a heavy defeat suffered at the hands of Walking Boys last year in the Dutch City.
The local side often referred to as the local Manchester United will be going out firing on all cylinders this afternoon at the GCC Ground Bourda in the second Group D match, the Guyana Defence Force falling to the Dutch side in game one on Friday last at the same venue.
Yesterday, Alpha had their final training session at the GFC Ground under Head Coach Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover who said it was a light pre-game workout which saw the team doing some amount of speed work and going over their game plan ahead of this afternoon’s important clash.
“We will be looking to play aggressive football this afternoon since we know that Walking Boys are uncomfortable when you play aggressive.”
Asked whether Alpha is mentally prepared for the battle cognizant of the fact that they lost to the same team last year, Dover, who was not with Alpha then, confidently stated that every game is a different one and this time it will surely be different.
“We are definitely turning the tables this time around; I have no doubt in my mind where that is concerned. We have the advantage of playing at home and we intend to sink them.
We have a confident bunch of players led by Lowe who has a wealth of experience. We are fully prepared and it’s now time to reap the rewards of hard work.”
Dover further stated that the players now have to deliver and once they play to the plan success will be the order of the day. “Most Important is that we have to score goals and make use of the chances they create.”
Football fans and supporters are encouraged to come out in their numbers to support the local side in their quest to advance in this competition.
The starting team is Ronson Williams in goal, Howard Lowe, Kelvin Mc Kenzie, Anthony Harding (LFB) and Brion Baker (RFB) marshalling the defence. Working the engine room (midfield) will be the veteran Shawn Bishop, Philbert Moffatt, Edison Gomes and Dwain Jacobs. The two strikers are Dwight Peters and Elton Brown.
Reserves are Chris Camacho, Leon Grumble, Quincy Madramootoo and Jamaicans Leighton Murray (GK), Kevin Deere, Troylon Williams and Oneke Ford.
The Technical staff is led by Wayne Dover, Gavin Brown (Assistant Coach), Andrew Hazel (Goal Keeper Coach), Joel Semple (Equipment Manager) with Clifton Bobb as Manager. Kick off time this afternoon is 16:00hrs.
