Home Affairs sources dropped a bombshell last night by disclosing that Cuban physiotherapist Guillermo Valintin Martinez Stable and Guyanese Usawattie Persaud were secretly married some nine years ago.
Kaieteur News has learned that the revelation came to light this week after Home Affairs officials discovered that Martinez had applied for Guyanese citizenship.
In the application, Martinez stated that he was married and identified Usawattie Persaud as his spouse.
Home Affairs officials reportedly unearthed a General Register Office marriage certificate which showed that the two became man and wife around February 2001.
The information suggests that Usawattie Persaud was leading a double life, since, up to the time of her death, she was still living in Main Street, New Amsterdam Berbice, with her common-law husband, who owns the popular Mara Cycle Store.
A son had told Kaieteur News that his mother had often travelled to Georgetown to see a Cuban doctor.
He said that he had last seen his mother alive two Wednesdays ago, when she indicated that she was travelling to Georgetown to tend to a High Court matter.
The decomposing bodies of 58-year-old Martinez and 47-year-old Persaud were found in Martinez’s Lot 136 Eping Avenue, Bel Air apartment, two Thursdays ago. Persaud’s nude and mutilated corpse was found on a blood-soaked mattress in the hallway.
An autopsy on Monday revealed that she had sustained ten stab wounds to the throat, chest and abdomen. The postmortem also revealed defensive wounds on both hands and blunt trauma to the back of the head.
Martinez’s body, with no marks of violence, was found on his bed. He was lying on his back, with his hands on his chest. His spectacles were nearby.
Police stated that the Cuban’s mouth was filled with an unidentified liquid, which they suspect he ingested.
Investigators took samples of the liquid.
A post mortem examination on Wednesday was inconclusive and samples taken from the remains are to be tested.
Investigators believe that Martinez killed Persaud before ingesting a poisonous substance.
But detectives are still to identify the fingerprints they lifted from a bloodstained knife they found in the Cuban physiotherapist’s apartment.
They have also still not examined the files of a laptop computer which was found submerged in water in a washing machine in the apartment.
Some investigators believe that the computer files hold clues about the motive for the murder/suicide.
