The owner of the car which is believed to be the getaway vehicle used by gunmen early yesterday morning, sought to clear his side of the story when he told this newspaper that his car was left at a body repair shop in Bagotstown.
The man, Ian Hopkinson, said that the car which is believed to have been the getaway car used by gunmen who sought to create terror in several parts of the city early yesterday morning, was left at the shop since Tuesday.
He said that he was made aware that the car was used in a crime spree after several heavily armed ranks visited his home.
Hopkinson said that the ranks visited his home and he heard what sounded like gunshots before he and his father ventured outside.
“They came and enquired if I am the owner of a white wagon PMM 812 so I said yes and the told me that the car was found at Ruimveldt.
The man said that when he arrived he recognized his vehicle but it bore at least three gunshots.
Hopkinson said that on Tuesday he took the car to the workshop to have some minor works done. The owner of the bodywork shop, who asked not to be identified, said that he learnt that the car was removed from his workshop after he received a calling informing him that the Police were at their business place.
At the station, the man said they were met by police ranks, the owner of the car and a young man who had been detained and whom police believed was the driver of the car. The proprietor of the business said the man who was detained by police worked with them and lives on the premises.
The man who has been detained since police believe he was the driver of the car told investigators that he went to a party and was dropping off a friend in Eccles when he saw police vehicles and panicked.
The man reportedly told investigators that he only arrived in Guyana from Suriname some three days ago. However his employers said that he had been working with them and living at the shop for the past month.
It is believed that some time during the night the man removed the car out of the garage for his own purposes.
In the meantime as police verify the young man’s story he was still in police custody up to press time.
