As 5 teams vie for Nagico title and cash prize
Pulsating cricket is anticipated today in West Berbcie when the Nagico sponsored 20/20 first division Berbice cricket festival commences today from 0:90hrs with a double header at Blairmont.
Several of the county’s top players are expected to be on show as four teams from Berbice (West Berbice, Police, Bermine and Blairmont Community Centre) will participate together with the Nagico Insurance Co. first division team that participates in St Maarten cricket competitions.
Also lending sponsorship support locally are A. Ally and Sons Ltd of New Amsterdam, Lalso and Sons of D’Edward and Candy Shop of Georgetown along with two St Maarten based businesses enterprises, Instant Concrete and Office World.
The four local teams will be involved in two preliminary matches today to determine the two semi-finalists with Police and Blairmont Community Centre clashing at Blairmont from 9:30am and then in the afternoon at 2pm. West Berbice and Bermine will meet at the same venue.
The winners will be involved in the semi-finals at Blairmont Sunday morning from 9:30am and the winner from that will come up against the Nagico team in the final at 2pm, for the Nagico Trophy and the $100,000 first prize.
Leeward Islands player Tonito Willett has been included in the Nagico line-up which will be captained by Guyanese-born Lionel Richie with Romaine Doodnauth as his deputy.
St Lucian Steven Evans, Angulian Keith Carty and Dominican Brat Dupie are also in the side which includes Guyanese Gary Solomon who represented St Marteen in the last Stanford 20/20 Regional tournament in Antigua.
Michael Newland will Captain the Police side while National fast bowler Brandon Bess is a part of the Blairmont line-up. West Berbice’s team will include guest player Royston Crandon, the Guyana first class player while West Indies Under-19 selectee Keon Joseph is also in the squad. Arthley Bailey, Keith Fraser, Eon Abel, Kwesi Mentore, Ralph Ogle, Colin Duke, Nigel Wilson, Keyron Fraser and Kenje Sedoc are also in the squad.
Bermine will have guest players, National all-rounder Steven Jacobs and ex-West Indies Under-19 opener Richard Ramdin in their team.
Georgetown based former Berbice off-spinner Sean Devers, Bermine’s leading first division wicket taker this season, has also been named in the squad which includes former national Under-19 Skipper Eugene LaFluer, his brother and national Under-17 player Jomal LaFluer, Berbice player Devon Clements, Essequibo off-spinner Andrew Williams, Riaz Kassim, Keion De Jesus, Charles Shepard, Ishwar Singh and Skipper Julian Moore.
Apart from the genuinely quick Brandon Bess, Blairmont will have in their team Karamdat Bissoondial, Nadesh Basdeo, Bisnarine Basdeo, Herelall Bridgelall, Romain Boodram and Narvin Rampersaud. The Cops will be spearheaded by Michael Saul, Kenroy Henry, Cylus Gibson, Jerry Heyliger, Winston Rose, Albert Sinclair, Charles Grimmond, Gregory Crandon.
Plenty of entertainment has been planned for the entire family both on and off the field with music systems and food and beverage stalls already in place.
Admission today is free while $500 will be charged to enter the ground on Sunday.
