Dear Editor,
The land of Many Waters first taste of Regional Under-19 glory occurred in July of 1975 when GCC and St. Stanislaus College student’s Timur Mohamed with centuries in each innings led Guyana to first innings points against Barbados at the (Mecca) Kensington Oval during the Benson & Hedges Finals.
The flamboyant left hander was at the helm again the following year, 1976, when Guyana defended the Benson & Hedges trophy with a commanding 10-wicket victory over Jamaica in the final at Sabina Park.
The heroes on that occasion were Andrew Lyght with a pugnacious 104 and leg spinner Sen Gopaul, who took 12 wickets in the match. After an eight-year drought Guyana again was crowned Regional Under-19 Champs, this time the championship trophy was hoisted by a Berbician for the first time, Latchman Bhansingh, but the man of the tournament was undoubtedly Carl Hooper. ‘Mr. Elegance’ finished with 404 runs and 33 wickets after Bhansingh’s triumph.
Guyana had to wait six years later for more Regional Under-19 success as Andre Percival had other ideas. The left-hander became the first Regional Under-19 captain to ever win three consecutive championships (1992) (1993) (1994).
Mahendra Nagamootoo continued the proud Berbice tradition by ensuring Guyana’s dominance continued by winning the 1995 tourney in Grenada.
Mahendra sibling Vishal emulated his elder brother when Guyana deplaned at Timehri International Airport with the Northern Telecoms trophy July of 1996.
Ramnaresh Sarwan halted the Berbice dominance by joining Timur Mohamed as the second Demerara Youth Captain to lead Guyana to a Regional Under-19 Championship in July and August of 1997.
Steven Jacobs joined the list by leading the Land of Many Waters to back to back championships in 2006 and 2007 but the million dollar question being asked is, who’s next?
