– leading goal-scorer in Semi-Pro League
By Rawle Welch
Guyana’s national striker Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams told Kaieteur Sport last Thursday that he is currently enjoying a terrific season with Surinamese club Leo Victor, in the Semi-Professional League, where he is the leading scorer with 22 goals to his name from 11 matches so far and seems set to win the top accolade.
The 30 year-old Guyanese striker, who first represented the club in 2003 said that due to his outstanding performance, the club has been able to qualify for the CONCACAF club championships. The club at the moment lies second in the standings just three points off leaders WBC which has 45 points from 18 matches, one less than Leo Victor, but with two games in hand.
Abrams’ goal-scoring ability has made him one of the most popular players in the League. The fleet-footed marksman, who has been known to mesmerise many opposition defences, disclosed that another Guyanese, Jermaine Brown, is also having a splendid season with the club, and together, they have earned the esteem of their respective opponents.
The prolific Abrams said he is hoping that through his exploits, opportunities can be created in Suriname for Guyanese players, adding that the sport is played on a more professional level there, and room for improvement exists.
“I would like to send a message through my performances to the scouts in Suriname and even further to say that Guyana has an abundance of talent that they could draw from.”
He recalled former stalwart, Anthony Stanton, as one who had done well in the Dutch territory and a player who was highly respected for his ability.
Back home for a brief holiday, before he returns to play in the club’s final engagement for the season, the dynamic forward revealed that he has no immediate intention of moving from the club and is quite happy there.
“When I return, we have one more match to play before the season finishes and then there is the transfer period in August and the reopening of the new season in October, but I’m not moving from Leo Victor,” he stated.
Questioned on his future in relation to Guyana’s football, Abrams indicated that he is still willing to be part of the framework and is always eager to wear the national colours, something he is extremely proud of whenever the opportunity presents itself.
Part of the national team for the past five years, Abrams said he still harbours thoughts of returning to play in the annual Kashif & Shanghai Invitational Tournament and is eagerly looking forward for a call to play for any club.
In his message to young footballers, he urged them to remain focused because when you are, many opportunities can come your way. “Many things can happen once a player remains focused and I’m an example of that right now,” he remarked. “I want to advise them to stay out of trouble and stay in school because education is vital,” he commented. He pointed out that the bigger you get in the sport, the more you are required to deal with the media.
Abrams extended best wishes to his friends Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson and Nigel Codrington for making Guyana proud in securing contracts in the Major League and the USL.
“I’m proud of both of them and hopefully someday I might be able to join them.”
He did, however, reveal that on the recommendation of national goalkeeper Richard Reynolds, he was able to attract the interest of official FIFA Players’ agent Henk Doest, who has sent up tapes with him playing, to Belgium and Turkey, with the aim of securing a contract.
