Executives of the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) has announced the final set of players that have qualified to contest for the National Championships slated for May 23 – 26 at the Chamber of Commerce Building, Waterloo Street, Georgetown.
They are Nicholas Grant, Kampta Ramnarine, Maurice Munroe, Prudence Edwards, Anand Mohabir, Devon Dublin and Michael Benjamin.
These players will join William Woolford, Ulric Harris, Colin Chichester, Ruby Cummings, Julian Skeete, Grace Hercules, James Krakowsky, Abigail McDonald and Leon Belony to contest for the National championships.
The National championship is the most prestigious on GASP calendar of activities and the two players that accrue the most games will then challenge each other in a best of five tournament to determine the national champion and Guyana’s representative for the World Scrabble championships scheduled for Malaysia later in the year.
Last year, Fred Collins failed in his bid to capture the title eventually won by Nigel Richards, a 40-year-old playing for New Zealand. He gained the title and $15,000 by winning a playoff against Ganesh Asirvatham of Malaysia.
Held in Mumbai, the international tournament featured 104 players from 41 countries. The competition has occurred every other year since 1991. Richards succeeded Adam Logan of Canada who won the 2005 competition.
