Leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo and left-armer Veerasammy Permaul took four wickets each to bowl Guyana to first innings points against Trinidad and Tobago on the penultimate day of their 12th round WICB Regional four-day cricket match at the Queens Park Oval yesterday.
On a day in which several stoppages had to be made due to rain, Bishoo grabbed 4-48 from 22.5 overs, while Permaul took 4-54 from 30 overs as T&T fell for 259. This was in reply to Guyana’s 282, giving the South Americans a 23-run lead as Skipper Daren Ganga fell eight short of his 21st first-class ton.
Needing to bat two overs, Guyana finished on none without loss in their second innings with Chris Barnwell and Sewnarine Chattergoon set to return when play resumes at 09:30hrs on the final day today.
Guyana struck an important blow early in the day when pacer Brandon Bess induced Adrian Barath (38) to edge a catch to second slip and leave the hosts on 71-2. T&T had resumed in glorious sunshine on 53-1 with Barath on 29 and Ganga on seven and Bess bowled with the pace he has shown all season but more importantly, the control that was missing from his armory in the proceeding rounds.
On a track with not much assistance, the lively 21-year-old Berbician bowled at the batmen and generally brought the ball back from outside of stump. The one that removed Barath was a beauty; leaving the right-hander who was drawn into the drive and Bess, whose rhythm also looked encouraging yesterday, was elated.
Daren Bravo got going with an authoritative on-driven boundary off Bess but a quick bouncer had him bobbing and weaving next ball and a keen contest between one of the most naturally talented young batsmen in the region and one of the quickest bowlers, seemed in the making.
With Chris Barnwell keeping things tight at the other end, another handful of spectators watched as Bravo flattered to deceive after adding 63 for the third wicket with his captain. The Brian Lara look-a-like; after playing two audacious cover drives off the off-spin of Steven Jacobs cut a short ball from Permaul low to point and to bring to an end a cameo 27 and leave T&T on 134-3.
The experienced Ganga was one short of his 43rd first-class fifty and Jason Mohamed was on six when a shower at 11:46hrs ended the first session with the home team on 143-3 and an early lunch was taken.
Play resumed at 12:40hrs under cloudy skies and T&T progressed to 154 before Mohamed (13) was removed by Permaul as the Guyanese enjoyed a rare consistently good day in the field this season.
More rain caused another interruption before Tea and when the action restarted the hosts reached 200-4 when another shower at 14:38hrs caused an early Tea to be taken with the Skipper 23 away from his 21st century at this level and his brother Sherwin Ganga on 17.
Following the break, Bishoo and Permaul went to work on the slow track when Ganga lofted Permaul to Bess at long-off after hitting eight fours and three sixes in his 262-ball and 316-minute 92 and his brother was taken at silly mid-on off Permaul for 36 from 77 balls with four fours and a six, nobody else prolonged resistance as the last five batsmen all failed to reach double figures. Sherwin Ganga departed at 232-5 as the last six wickets tumbled for 27 runs.
Steven Jacobs, who was hit on his ankle fielding at silly mid-on, left the field for the last part of the T&T innings but his injury was described as ‘nothing major’ by the Guyana camp.
Dowlin said he was happy with the work of his players yesterday and hoped the team could finish off the series on a positive note after having their worst season at regional first-class level.
“We bowled very well today and I was pleased with the consistency shown by everyone, especially our strike bowler (Brandon) Bess. We fielded well although the field was a bit damp from the rain and if we could continue to be consistent and have more days like today (yesterday) we should see improvement in our overall cricket,” Dowlin said.
“This is a young team but we have the talent. It is just putting it together day in day out and being properly prepared, especially mentally for cricket at this level,” Dowlin added.
