Colorado Rapids acquire rights to
‘Jackie Chan’ in trade with Toronto FC
Guyana’s most popular footballer Gregory ‘Jackie’ Chan Richardson is closer to signing on the dotted line to become this nation’s first Major League Soccer player.
Richardson, who left Guyana a few weeks ago for trials with MLS side Toronto FC in Miami, is reported to have been traded to the Colorado Rapids.
A report on Colorado F.C’s website confirms that Richardson has been traded.
In exchange, Colorado sent their natural second round 2010 Super Draft pick to Toronto FC.
Head Coach of Colorado Gary Smith commented on their acquisition of Richardson: “I think we are adding a very explosive and athletic forward who I believe has a huge amount of potential.” “I am sure he will be a wonderful addition to our already youthful and exciting front line.”
Richardson has been on trial with Toronto FC during the 2009 preseason (February 7-14) and appeared in three exhibition matches with Toronto. His addition to the Rapids’ roster will make him the first Guyanese player to sign a contract with Major League Soccer.
The Guyana National Team forward recently made a name for himself playing with the Trinidad & Tobago Pro League club Joe Public F.C. where he recorded a hat-trick and added an assist in a 4-0 victory over the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium on September 2, 2008 in the CONCACAF Champions League.
In 2007, he was recognised by the Pro League Board as the Most Valuable Player of the FA Trophy.
While in Miami as guest of the Guyana Sports Development Foundation (GSDF), Richardson trained with fellow Golden Jaguar Brion Baker and had specialist training by Bill Adams, a Director of the GSDF and owner of the Bill Adams Tennis Academy, while his fitness was fine tuned by former United States Olympic Hurdler Tony Dees who is currently working with the LA Fitness Gym.
