A search team organized by Prometheus Resources Guyana Inc. is likely to reach the suspected crash site of the missing Beech King aircraft today.
Company official Shazadh Khan confirmed on Saturday that experts scrutinizing aerial photographs had spotted what appeared to be a section of the aircraft in an area in the Middle Mazaruni.
“The team is on its way, (but) it will take a couple of days to reach to the area,” he said.
News of the possible location came just days after the team had temporarily suspended its ground search for the missing plane and its three passengers.
Mr. Khan disclosed that inclement weather had forced the team to suspend its search on December 15.
The search team had planned to resume after the Christmas holidays, but then received news of the possible find.
“We have brought our guys back and sent them in.”
Speaking about the hazardous terrain that the group had to cover, Mr. Khan said that the men encountered flash floods and, on one occasion, were forced to sleep overnight in trees.
The families of the three missing men have reportedly been informed.
Meanwhile, Minister of Transport, Works and Communication, Robeson Benn, yesterday told Kaieteur News that he had not been officially informed of the report.
However, he said that a local team will resume the search once the report is confirmed.
On Friday, Captain Gerry Gouveia said a number of pilots examining aerial photographs had identified what appeared to be the tail of the Beech King aircraft protruding from trees in the jungle.
The aircraft was plotting potential mineral deposits at the time of the crash. It was reportedly near the escarpment in the Middle Mazaruni, and often flew over the escarpment to plot turns, since it was “flying lines.”
One reason for the crash was that the pilot apparently was taken by surprise at the elevation of the escarpment, which borders the Middle and Upper Mazaruni.
Capt Gouveia suggests that the pilot underestimated the steepness of the escarpment and was forced to climb faster than he actually could, and the aircraft stalled, then dived down into the dense vegetation.
He noted that the aircraft might have plummeted vertically, nose first, hence the failure to create any significant clearance in the vegetation and so make the crash site easily visible.
Although the locally-organised air and ground search was halted, Prometheus Resources Guyana Inc. continued flying, taking aerial pictures which were later posted online and scrutinized by a barrage of pilots.
The Beech King Air N87V, chartered from Dynamic Aviation Group Inc by Terraques Ltd, disappeared on November1while conducting geographical surveys in the Mazaruni area.
Missing and presumed dead are US pilot James Barker, First Officer Chris Paris, also from the US, and Canadian technician Patrick Murphy.
