The Berbice Cricket Board of Control has launched its All Time Berbice Team. The unveiling of the All Time XI was another project of the Board’s Special Events Committee.
Chairman of the Committee, Hilbert Foster at the launching informed that the team was selected by three former long serving administrators who had combined services of over 80 years to cricket in the Ancient County. They are Mortimer George (former BCBC Secretary), Lennox Phillips and Ansell Hazel, both former Presidents.
The selection identified the eleven greatest players to represent the County over the years and to use them as inspiration to the present generation of cricketers especially, those at the junior levels.
The Berbice All Time XI that was unveiled follows in batting order; Roy Fredricks, Clayton Lambert, Rohan Kanhai (Captain), Alvin Kallicharran, Basil Butcher, Joe Solomon, Randolph Ramnarace (all rounder), Milton Pydanna (wicketkeeper), Mahendra Nagamootoo, John Trim and Leslaine Lambert, with Leonard Baichan (12th) and Leslie Amsterdam 13th man.
Calling the team a World Class XI, Foster noted that the selectors did a fine job noting that the batting speaks for itself with over 270 test matches combined, not to mention runs. He noted that all-rounders Ramnarace, Pydanna and Nagamootoo add strength to the team.
Leading the bowling are Trim, L. Lambert, Ramnarace and regional record holder Mahendra Nagamootoo. Part time bowlers Fredricks (left arm spin). Kallicharran (left arm spin), Butcher (leg spin), Soloman (leg spin) and C. Lambert (medium pacer) would assist the three main bowlers.
The All Time XI played a combined 1,804 first class matches scoring 109,432 runs including close to 300 centuries and took a combined 871 first class wickets.
At the launch former Test Legend and member of the All Time X1 Basil Butcher in brief remarks noted that it was an honour for him to be selected among the greatest players to ever represent Berbice.
Calling it a watershed moment, he praised the BCBC for the progress made in Berbice over the last 12 months, challenging them to keep on the same path. He also called on the present generation of Berbice cricketers to be more focused and disciplined.
Acting President Keith Foster described the unveiling of the All Time XI as historic. “We are breaking new ground with this initiative and I am challenging the other two cricket boards in the Guyana to also name their All Time XI. This would not only acknowledge our cricketing heroes but serve as an inspiration to the present players who could one day be named in such a team.”
Other speakers at the function included Vice President, David Black and Mayor Claude Henry. Mr. Butcher and Mahendra Nagamootoo officially unveiled the team’s large poster which is mounted on the walls of the Berbice board office.
The poster which was sponsored by the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club includes cricket records of the players, photos and personal data.
Ten other players were considered by the panel for selection but failed to make the team. They are Sudesh Dhaniram, Narsingh Deonarine, Sewnarine Chattergoon, Tyrone Etwaroo, “Sugar Boy” Baijnauth, Keith Cameron and Romain Etwaroo.
